Equus opened last night in the west end and i am happy to report that my boy wizard is a bonafide stage actor... here's a review from
bbc.co.uk...
...belligerent knowingness (Mark Shelton, BBC)
It plays the drama at full gallop, and Radcliffe climbs aboard in a performance that is ballsy (in every sense).
It's not just the ten-minute nude scene that's a bold choice here. The defiant break with the character of Harry Potter that he has, until now, been indelibly associated with is also marked by the shock of seeing him smoke onstage.
Making his professional stage debut in a dramatic role, Radcliffe is playing his own age here, though he's so slight of stature that he could pass for far younger.
He brings a tentative, fragile vulnerability to the role, but there's also a belligerent knowingness that is spot-on.
He is magnificently partnered by Richard Griffiths (Uncle Vernon in the Harry Potter series), who has lately been cornering the market in doubting mentors to young men.
After his creation of the role of Hector in the stage (and subsequent film) premiere of Alan Bennett's The History Boys, he once again simultaneously brings both a warmth and an ache to the role of the psychiatrist here.
The play may not always be convincing, but both actors are utterly so as they bring it to fresh dramatic life.
