i am... obsessed. so a week and a half ago i went home to MD and saturday night mom and i went to the mall. she wanted to pop in to borders... ok... so i find her in the soundtrack section of the cd's listening to this broadway show called "wicked"... now i'd noticed a copy of a book called "wicked" in the bathroom earlier in the day. what is this; wicked fever? yes siree bob! wicked fever. and i've caught it!!
So she says "here, listen do this." i'm standing in the middle of borders with this enormous earphones on my head (why do they have to be SOOOOOO big??) having no idea what's in store for me. and what i hear is one of the most fantastic voices (2 actually) that i've ever heard.
really. What i heard was Idina Menzel singing "Defying Gravity" the "show stopper" of the hit broadway musical that i'd never heard of (how could i have never heard of it, it won a slew of tony's this past year???) anyway... all i could say was "wow!". mom bought the cd and burned me a copy. and that was saturday a week and a half ago. i've been listening to it practically nonstop since then! and i still say "wow" except that now i can sing along because well, you know me and songs... i know like, every word in the show now. lol! (i will say that i took a small break to listen to arik's cd because i'm a good friend) then back to wicked. anywho...
we're going to see the show (the snyder fam) in january, i can NOT wait!!
in the meantime i bought the book to read (book before show) and it's really interesting. for those of you who are interested it is called
wicked: the life and times of the wicked witch of the west by Gregory Maguire. it's very cool. it's the backstory to the wizard of oz. elphaba's story. oh yeah, that's the witches name. very smartly named after the author of the wizard of oz,
L. Frank
Baum.
LFB. Elphaba. get it? cool huh?? here are some pictures from the show...
it's interesting how the author weaves the wizard of oz into his story... the ruby slippers, elphaba's "allergic" reaction to water. you should see how she dresses herself up to go out in the rain! how she gets her hat and broom and especially her relationship with Glinda (the good witch of the north). would you believe they were college roommates? that explains alot doesnt it? well, the book really makes you think about what is evil and what is good and how things arent always as they appear. i highly recommend picking up a copy.
and the soundtrack too! buy it! the two leads kristen chenoweth and idina menzel are two of the most talented voices out there. idina menzel originated "maurine" in RENT and kristen chenoweth originated "Sally" in You're a Good Man Charlie Brown on b-way. if you're looking for good new broadway talent also look up Thoroughly Modern Millie. Sutton Foster is in the title role and she's fantastic!! anyway... i think i'm done gushing about this book and show for now. www.wickedthemusical.com.
enjoy the pictures...
